Data Center Data Center

  • General characteristics

Data centres have become key infrastructures for daily life and the operations of manufacturers and service providers. The continuous digitisation of the economy keeps driving the need for "data factories" that need energy to run.

The International Energy Agency (iea.org) estimates that the consumption of this sector amounts to about 1.5% of the world's entire energy demand. Astoundingly, the obvious growth of AI could bring consumption to 3-4% of the total in 2030, according to many estimates.

Air conditioning in data centres ensures the service continuity of these essential infrastructures and accounts for a major percentage of the energy consumption of auxiliary systems. System types differ according to climatic conditions and building characteristics, with the latest design trends including hot and cold aisle compartmentalisation, modularity and liquid-cooling solutions, all of which require a high level of flexibility.

Achieving sustainability and energy-saving goals means continuously improving cooling solutions, starting with the adoption of innovative high-efficiency technologies, also considering that energy-saving regulations are setting KPI targets, such as PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) and WUE (Water Usage Effectiveness), in many countries.

CAREL has more than 50 years of experience in cooling technology innovations, based on multiple product platforms designed to save energy. They are rooted in application-specific knowledge that makes CAREL the ideal partner to identify the best option, choosing from liquid cooling solutions (CDU, chillers, dry coolers, etc.) and air cooling solutions (CRAC, CRAH, in-row cooling, Rear Door Heat Exchangers, Cooling Wall, Direct and Indirect Evaporative Cooling, etc.).

Monitoring energy consumption and ensuring that equipment is running within its optimal operating conditions has become increasingly crucial for data centres. To address this need, CAREL offers a complete range of electrical parameter detection sensors and systems for use in combination with edge monitoring systems integrated into the system.

  • Plus

    • Energy saving: CAREL’s solutions are designed to achieve the highest air conditioning efficiency, both at a component and system level
    • Mission critical: For these types of mission-critical applications, service continuity is essential, and therefore the solutions need to be highly reliable both in terms of component quality and system redundancy.
    • Flexibility: The energy-saving solutions can be adapted for use in all major application scenarios, including retrofits to improve the PUE of existing data centres.
    • Cybersecurity: All CAREL products are developed in accordance with the latest security standards.
    • Connectivity: All products come with various connectivity options, while the programmable controllers in particular feature embedded solutions or optional boards for communication using the most widely-used protocols.
    • Temperature and humidity control: Keeping both these parameters within the guidelines suggested by ASHRAE TC 9.9 requires integrated solutions, especially in adiabatic cooling systems.
